AI-Based Oral Assessments of Learning: RIP Multiple Choice Exams

Educators moved from rich oral assessments of learning to the widespread use of multiple-choice , primarily because multiple choice exams allowed for an objective assessment of learning at scale. The acceleration of generative AI is changing education in many ways, some challenging, but others offering great opportunity. In my presentation I will highlight how we are using conversational AI to perform oral assessments of learning at scale in my 1800 student class. A lot of research needs to be done to insure such assessments are valid, fair, and superior to multiple choice testing, but we are convinced this is the future of assessment in education. Not only will it provide a more holistic and equitable testing environment, but more importantly the ability to assess learning holistically will support innovation in education more generally.
