AI study assistants and the replacement of university lecturers
I will report on two aspects of a running project. First, data from students using an AI assistant tutor tailored to my statistics course show it to be an effective facilitator of student queries that would not otherwise have taken place, as inhibitions in exposing one's lack of understanding are widespread.
Second, I present how to give faculty members the capacity to produce their own personalized AI artefacts to be deployed as teaching assistants. To control the quality and content of the assistant, the system adopts retrieval-assisted generation (RAG), an established architecture where the chatbot resorts to predefined material to answer queries. This RAG authoring system allows faculty members to create digital twins of theirselves as teachers transparently, while conveying feedback from a potentially large audience with the help of the language model.
