Sharing in Learning and Teaching: What the Future Holds
Ensuring the best experiences for learners is a vital mission within higher education. Learners are to be nurtured for creativity, critical thinking and problem solving while gaining the highest quality skills in their varied disciplines. A learner-centered approach is pivotal in the future of Higher Education, which is to expect exponential growth in terms of the diversity of learners’ needs and goals throughout the course of their professional development. The higher education ecosystem is also expected to become increasingly more interdisciplinary, collaborative, open to society and transnational. As such, universities are called upon to break walls and build bridges towards ensuring a more sustainable future. Under this vision, learning and teaching play a central role in preparing the learners to become transformative drivers of Europe’s economic and social wealth.
The Covid19 pandemic emphasized the relevance of learning and teaching in higher education, particularly as it provided a unique opportunity for teachers around the globe to test new methodologies. The main driver for this massive change was the need to maintain the engagement in online environments while providing a high-quality experience for learners. It is now of utmost importance that teachers maintain their motivation to uninterruptedly improve learning and teaching practices and that institutions provide continuous training opportunities for professional development in order to foster high competence standards. Opening up internationally and sharing knowledge, experiences and resources may be vital to the appearance of strong, resilient and sustainable communities of learning and teaching practice. In this context, I will showcase an Erasmus+ project – ColLab, a digital hub developed to allow continuous opportunities for such cooperation among teachers around Europe and beyond. We are convinced that ColLab provides a powerful tool that will empower the international movement already underway that is transforming learning and teaching in higher education. This project, which is coordinated by the University of Aveiro, involves 5 partner Universities from the European Consortium of Innovative Universities, a university network with thirty years of experience that embarked on a journey in 2019 to create a new European University under the EU Universities initiative by 2030. ColLab will provide the ECIU University with a platform to consolidate and coordinate communities of pedagogical practice in unison with higher education providers around the world towards building networks of HEI professionals committed to ensuring excellence and relevance in international education.
