They generate, test and impart knowledge and skills, enabling them to serve as a foundation for social innovation and understanding. At the same time, social, technological, political and economic developments present higher education institutions with new challenges. As a result, the demands placed on higher education, its role, its forms and its impact are changing.

‘Strong enough’ is both a statement and a question. Universities have the potential to help shape the future: through the knowledge generated there, through the people who work and study there, and through their role as places of exchange, critical discourse and social understanding. But what does it mean to be “strong enough” to actively shape the future of education and society? Which aspects of higher education are still, or already (once again), fit for the future? What can and must we change? Where is there a fundamental need for mutual understanding?

These include questions such as:

What makes higher education institutions strong enough to fulfil their social role in the long term? What strategies and structures ensure their capacity to act? And how can collaboration — between higher education institutions themselves, as well as with the political sphere, civil society and the business sector — support this?

What makes learning, teaching and assessment sustainable enough to prepare people for an open future? How can higher education safeguard and further develop the quality of its formats and methods, as well as its standards, even under constantly changing conditions?

How resilient are universities to the impacts of digital technologies? What pedagogical, ethical, organisational and technical decisions are they faced with in this regard? And what visions of the future seem possible in this context?

To what extent are students, lecturers and staff able to take action in the face of changing demands? What skills do they need to play an active role in shaping higher education, as well as society, politics and the economy? What makes universities inclusive, participatory and vibrant places for everyone? And how can universities specifically promote and support this development?

The University:Future Festival 2027 invites you to discuss these and related questions together from a variety of perspectives. What matters is not whether your contribution can be clearly assigned to one of these questions, but rather what impetus it provides for the future of higher education.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
For U:FF Ultras: Where’s my track?

It won’t exist in 2027 — and that’s by design. The program for the University:Future Festival is developed in line with the theme, drawing on the questions, ideas and experiences contributed by the community. The key thematic areas are shaped on the basis of the submissions — because this makes current issues, fields of discourse and practice, as well as new developments and questions about the future, more visible than they would be within a fixed thematic framework. The program thrives on your contributions.

</details>

The venues for the University:Future Festival 2027

The University:Future Festival combines an extensive digital program with the main stage in Berlin and three partner stages in Braunschweig, Graz and Nuremberg.

Digital stages (8–10 June): the full thematic scope of the festival. We are looking for people with innovative ideas and critical questions, as well as exciting projects and experiences relating to the present and future of sustainable and effective universities.

In particular, we are reaching out to:

University staff: The festival brings together the people who help shape and develop universities. We are looking for perspectives from teaching and teaching development, higher education pedagogy, university development, university management, as well as administration, IT and other service and support areas. Whether it’s teaching innovation, organisational development, digital infrastructure or campus development, democratic participation or societal impact: good ideas for higher education emerge from many corners of the university. We look forward to hearing about your experiences, insights and ideas.

Students: Students experience higher education on a daily basis, help shape it and think ahead. Strengthening the voice of students is a particular priority for the University:Future Festival. Whether you’re part of a student initiative, a student union, a university group or an individual: contribute your experiences, ideas, critiques and visions for the future to the festival program.

Civil society: Universities are part of society. But they do not shape the future of (digital) higher education on their own. We are looking for ideas and experiences from people involved in educational initiatives, associations, foundations, federations, communities and other civil society organisations. You highlight societal needs, shape educational processes, connect communities or trial new forms of cross-sector collaboration: we look forward to your contribution!

Businesses: We are seeking perspectives from businesses, start-ups and EdTech companies. How are you experiencing the changes in learning, skills development and collaboration? What experiences are you gaining at the intersections of higher education, technology, innovation and practice? Please share insights, challenges and ideas that may be relevant to the further development of higher education institutions.

Please note that pure product presentations and sales pitches cannot form part of the program

What makes a good submission?

A good submission is characterised by the following:

Relevance, stance, topicality, constructive criticism or concrete solutions: we aim to shed light on different points of view and welcome a wide range of topics and perspectives.

A vision for the future: we are interested in contributions that open up (new) perspectives on the future of higher education and link the present with the future.

Entertaining and high-quality: The U:FF is a festival. We are looking for high-quality content that is methodologically sound, presented in an engaging way and communicated creatively. Formats that facilitate participation, exchange and new experiences are particularly welcome.

Relevance: In the title and description, establish a link to the festival’s theme and to the discussion on the future of higher education.

Diversity: A balanced gender representation, visibility of people from diverse backgrounds – with or without disabilities, people of colour, and those who do not identify with the traditional binary understanding of gender – is of particular importance to us.

No sales presentations: Contributions should share insights, experiences or ideas for discussion. Pure product presentations, marketing pitches or overt advertising will not be considered.

Click here for the submission form

Venues: Where you can present

The University:Future Festival is a hybrid event with three in-person stages in Germany and Austria. The individual venues offer opportunities to explore and network, whilst the majority of the talks will take place online. Please note the following:

The standard format is for presentations to be delivered online. From 8 to 10 June, the majority of the program will take place across several parallel digital stages.

It is possible that, for program-related and organisational reasons, we may invite you to present on one of our physical stages. In that case, you will present on-site and be streamed to the digital platform. We are therefore asking where, in principle, you could and would like to present from.

Please note: If we invite you to present on one of our in-person stages, we generally limit the number of people to two for cost reasons.

The decision regarding the presentation venue does not reflect on the quality or relevance of a contribution. The digital program is popular and, due to high demand, offers a wide reach.

The U:FF 2027 live stages

Berlin:Stage (9–10 June): Berlin:Stage addresses the key questions raised by the festival’s theme and brings together contributions from the community with national and international perspectives. We are seeking submissions that contextualise current developments, open up new perspectives on higher education or spark debates about its future. The focus is on contributions that examine the future viability of higher education institutions across the full spectrum. The stage is organised by the festival organisers.

Future:Tech Stage, Braunschweig (8 June): The Future:Tech Stage discusses questions regarding the future of higher education institutions through the lens of new, rapidly evolving technologies. How are the profile of universities and the roles of teaching staff changing? What will the university of tomorrow feel like, and how are teaching and learning spaces changing? And what visions can we envisage for academic education in the near and distant future? The stage is organised by the Emerging Tech Lab and Media Lab at the Project House of the Technical University of Braunschweig.

AI Force:Stage Graz (8 June): AI Force:Stage seeks to explore current developments and the limits of artificial intelligence in higher education teaching and administration. Which practical applications are already in use or currently being developed? How can higher education institutions cooperate when dealing with AI, and how can the associated legal and ethical questions be addressed? The event is organised by Graz University of Technology in collaboration with the Digital University Hub and iMooX.at.

Shifting:Stage Nuremberg (8 June): Shifting:Stage brings together current research and university practice, raising fundamental questions about higher education in the face of social change, shifting skills requirements and artificial intelligence. How are the conditions and processes of learning, teaching and assessment at universities and higher education institutions changing? What do we know about their effectiveness, and what are the implications for teaching, examinations and curriculum development? The event is organised by the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg and the Technical University of Nuremberg.

Call for Participation Process

The call for participation for the University:Future Festival 2027 is open until 10 January 2027. You may participate as a co-speaker on additional proposals.

Once the submission deadline has passed, your proposal will be assessed by one of the seven sub-juries. The juries are made up of experts from the higher education and education community, students, and representatives from the Higher Education Forum on Digitalisation, the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education Teaching, the Stifterverband and the partner venues. We ensure that your submission is read and assessed by at least five, and usually up to 10, people.

In a second stage, the heads of the juries and selected subject experts will meet and, as program committees, decide on the program content. You will receive a decision by the end of March at the latest.

In the event of a rejection, you may, upon request, receive the comments from the jury members who assessed your submission.

Further information can be found in the FAQs

Please also take a look at our other calls:

Through the Call for Arts & Experience, we are seeking submissions until 10 January 2027.
